Abstract:   Big Data is not about “big” data, it is not even about data. Rather it is about the value of data, i.e. the information hidden in large amounts of data. The time seems to be ripe to yet again attack the old problem: how to extract this information? Advances in hardware (availability of massive processing power combined with huge amounts of amassed data), software (distributed processing and storage, Hadoop, HANA etc.) and algorithmics (new analytics methods) has created a unique opportunity for the IT industry to demonstrate how to extract valuable business information as well as how to use it for decision support, resulting in a quantum leap in business value. Novel ways (such as indirect diagnosis in healthcare) or making predictions for surprising applications (e.g. predictive policing) become possible and feasible if we concentrate on the big value hidden in (big) data. This is a new field with tremendous excitement, intellectual challenge and applicability.
