Abstract:   There is a huge potential for SMEs in manufacturing and engineering for improving their competitiveness through increasingly using modelling and simulation technologies. Their use is highly complex both in terms of simulation tools and of HPC compute resources, and therefore largely not well exploited. In the context of the European Public Private Partnership Factories of the Future under the ICT Work Programme 2013, several innovation pilot projects are to be supported, which bring simulation services in reach of SMEs along the value chains in engineering and manufacturing. In more than 60 application experiments, a large number of SMEs will be enabled to boost the degree of innovation and quality of their products offered at competitive prices; and other SMEs to learn from the experience. Access to commercially sustainable clouds of HPC resources is a key enabler for these simulation services. Being at the centre of the activity, Europe's independent software vendors and service providers for simulation play a key role in the initiative. Innovation is targeted at 3 levels:

  • Users: one-stop-shopping access to simulation services including expertise and cloud resources
  • Software suppliers: software porting on the cloud, experimenting new business models in a controlled environment – pay per use
  • HPC resource providers who establish a European commercial pilot cloud of HPC resources with providers, which is sustainable beyond project duration.
Projects under this EU initiative are to start before summer 2013, which makes the ISC event very timely for giving an overview of the initiative, the drivers and objectives behind it, and future opportunities offered to SMEs in terms of participating in an experiment.
