Abstract:   Concerns about the present global energy situation and the impacts of climate change are the driving forces for optimizing combustion power plants operation towards maxi-mum efficiency, and thus minimizing the emission of greenhouse gases. Computational modelling of the combustion process in industrial scale combustion systems has become a key technology to achieve this ambitious goal. A prerequisite for successfully applying computational modelling to the optimization of industrial scale combustion equipment is the availability of a reliable combustion modelling technology. RECOM’s proprietary 3D combustion simulation software RECOM-AIOLOS and the associated plant processing method are widely accepted in the power industry as a reliable combustion modelling technology because of the extensive validation with measurements of relevant quantities from industrial scale systems utilising a wide range of firing systems and fuels. However, the experience gained with RECOM-AIOLOS in the past decade shows that the computational demands for performing large scale simulations of combustion power plants are very high and can only be met by high-performance computers. The content of the presentation will therefore dem-onstrate how a reliable combustion modelling technology is developed and continuously optimised to run on ever changing high-performance computer architectures.
