Abstract:   Most manufacturers, especially small and medium enterprises, mainly use desktop workstations for their daily R&D work. Because of the sheer size of the simulation jobs, they often do the preparation work during the day and production runs over-night, resulting in one simulation job per day. Viable alternatives are cluster and cloud computing.
Our HPC community is quite familiar with core ideas of cloud computing like on-demand access to remote resources, pay-per-use, or multi-tenancy. However, as the cloud computing delivery model takes off with the promise of easy access to pay-per-use computing resources, our HPC community has been mostly on the fence, observing and discussing the potential hurdles to its adoption in HPC, for example data privacy, incompatible software licensing models, losing control over important assets, need of specialized expertise, and a dozen others noted.
In this session, we will investigate different options of moving beyond the sole use of workstations for digital manufacturing, and how breaking the CAE jobs free from the restrictions of the workstation environment and moving them to larger cluster systems or even to the Cloud could benefit the engineers as well as the software vendors.
