Hans-Christian Hoppe

ExaCluster Lab Director, Intel

Hans-Christian Hoppe has been working in parallel programming, working on message passing systems and tools, eventuating in the definition and implementation of the first successful European Grid system (Unicore). Hans-Christian joined Intel in 2003, leading the development of the Intel Cluster Tools software product line. In addition, he directed research on Computational Grids/Clouds, producing the first Grid SW stack with integrated support for virtualization. He started pioneering work in Intel on using Intel's then graphicsonly Larrabee architecture for HPC. Between 2009 and 2012, Hans-Christian led Intel's Visual Computing Institute, a collaboration with Computer Graphics experts in Germany and Europe. The institute employed approx 50 postgraduate researchers. His research focussed on programming paradigms for compute--intensive graphics and HPC applications that match the rapidly evolving compute accelerator and coprocessor architectures. Since 2012, Hans-Christian is the Intel director of the ExaCluster Lab at the research Center Jülich, a research collaboration between Intel, FZJ and the ISV ParTec. The institute explores novel architectures based on Intel's MIC systems, and researches the scaling issues on the way to Exascale, with particular focus on energy consumption, resiliency and programmability of systems.
