Dr. George Beckett

Deputy Director, University of Western Australia

Dr George Beckett is the Deputy Director of iVEC, the supercomputing centre in Western Australia. As part of its role to promote the uptake of supercomputing, eResearch and visualisation capabilities, iVEC is managing the Pawsey Centre – a new petascale computing facility designed to meet the demands of Australia’s SKA pathfinder projects and to provide a step change in capability for the country’s world-class geosciences research community. As well as being Deputy Director, Beckett is also the program leader for the Supercomputing Technology and Applications Program, which works with researchers to grow their ambitions and develop their capability and capacity to use petascale computing resources.
Beckett’s previous role was as Senior Project Leader at EPCC, the leading European supercomputing centre at the University of Edinburgh. During his time at EPCC, he managed a number of high-profile, international projects, including the middleware program for the International Lattice Data Grid.
Beckett has a research background in computational mathematics. He was a research fellow in the Numerical Analysis Group at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, has an Honours Degree in Mathematics from New College, Oxford, and a Ph.D. in Computation Mathematics from the University of Strathclyde.
